This Cistercian abbey was founded in 1150 in Abbeyshrule village about 30 km outside of Mullingar in Longford. It was one of Ireland’s first Cistercian abbeys and was founded by the O’Ferralls and colonised by monks from Mellifont in the valley of the river Inny.
